Darren's Dream

On December 5, 2006, The Frances Foundation commenced its efforts to grant a wish to Darren Kroupa from Manasquan. Darren grew up with a keen interest in music. While attending college, he was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. For more than two years, Darren waged a courageous battle against this horrific cancer. Darren's parents desperately sought help trying to find a way to bring some joy to their son's life.

Darren's favorite singer was Trent Reznor, the lead singer of the band Nine Inch Nails ("NIN"). For years, Darren's dream was to meet Trent and NIN. With the assistance of Springsteen's drummer Max Weinberg, The Frances Foundation successfully arranged an exciting trip for Darren and his parents to NIN's recording studio in Hollywood, California. Co-sponsered by The Frances Foundation and Jason's Dreams for Kids, Darren and his parents thoroughly enjoyed their stay at the Renaissance Hotel; and Darren spent from January 24th January 26, 2007 with Trent and NIN as they prepared for a European tour and worked on their next album. Trent and NIN adopted Darren as one of their own. Darren could not have been happier as he lived his dream, hanging and making music with his favorite singer and band. A credit on NIN's just-released album goes to Darren.

On March 30, 2007, Trustees from The Frances Foundation had the privilege of spending time with Darren. This meeting occurred just a little more than one day before Darren passed. Although Darren was confined to his bed at home, and Darren was awesome in his ability to remain dignified, respectful, polite and engaging under the most difficult circumstances. Even knowing that his battle was almost over, it was so important to Darren to clearly his immense gratitude and sincere thanks for having had the opportunity to live his dream.

Darren passed on April 1, 2007, surrounded by the love of his parents, his sister, family and friends. He passed with his ultimate dream embedded in his heart and soul. Darren is the angel we were lucky to meet and assist - the same angel who has brought an even greater level of inspiration to The Frances Foundation to continue its mission to bring smiles to courageous kids and help to their families.
